Archie Mavromatis, a student of theology and urban studies as well as a native of Queens, New York was a voice for those that couldn’t speak and a pillar of strength for those that needed a helping hand.
Early in his career, Archie started working on local, state and national political campaigns beginning with Mayor Abraham David "Abe" Beame’s Administration in 1977 and continuing with Mayor Edward Irving Koch. He served as Campaign Manager for the election of Nettie Mayersohn to New York State Assembly, and continued within the political world working for Governor Mario Cuomo, as well as serving as the Queens County Coordinator for "Giuliani for Mayor". In 1983 Archie was elected District Leader for the 34th Assembly District, and went on to serve the Liberty Regular Democratic Club for eight years.
In addition to his civic service, Archie dedicated significant time to charitable organizations. He served on the board of directors for many local organizations including the Patti Fund Care for Childhood Cancer and the Astoria Civic Association.
After years of service, the man who was rellentless in his quest to help others in need, was suddenly halted by a debilitating disease. In 2005, Archie lost his battle to pancreatic cancer, however his legacy did not stop there. As the architect of our first golf classic, Save a Young Life Foundation dedicates this event in memory of his unwavering commitment to his community and to a man who inspired all.
Archie Mavromatis was a man of high standards, integrity and had a boundless enthusiasm for whatever task he tookon. Since his death Mary Mavromatis, his wife, continued her husband's legacy with her charitable contributions and works. She was an inspiring presence that moved us all.
